For Muslims, the mosque is a place of worship, law and assembly and also serves as an area for nurturing learning and fostering the community spirit.

 

Each mosque is unique in architecture and design, inspired by the various teachings of the Quran and the people of the land who have embraced the religion.

 

This August, 7 Wonders of the Muslim World takes viewers on a journey around the Muslim world, showcasing seven exquisite mosques and tracing the history and message of Islam through the eyes of six young Muslims.

The one-hour documentary follows these youths as they make their maiden pilgrimage to Mecca and captures their feelings on this journey of a lifetime.

7 Wonders of the Muslim World premieres on Sun, Aug 1 at 9pm and encores on Aug 2 at 2pm and Aug 8 at 6pm on Discovery Channel.

The programme looks at these historic mosques and explores the lives and beliefs of six young men and women who live near and pray in these mosques.

It follows their momentous journey as they leave their homes and families to travel to the holiest place of worship for Muslims. Interspersed with expert commentary on religion and Muslim architecture, 7 Wonders of the Muslim World explains the five pillars of Islam and how they link Muslims across the world to the centre of their faith.

2. The Al-Aqsa Mosque (Jerusalem);
3. The Alhambra (Granada, Spain);
4. The Imam Khomeini Mosque (Esfahan, Iran);
